COMMANDERS REPORT
s
penultimate, meaning next to last, message will indeed be shorter than B
TEMPUS FUGIT comrades. Many Latin scholars or owners of grandfather clocks can
tell you that translates to "time flies". And that has been the case the last
two years at your Post. I am writing this message to meet the publishing
deadline; consequently your new Commander will review the State Convention in
the next issue. There are only a few major changes in leadership as Bob
Nicholson takes over with support from new Sr Vice Bobby Ratuis. Bob will
shortly name a new House Committee.
The Ladies have turned Pasta Plus into International Night with great success
due to the leadership of Becky Sommers. The first "Mexican Night" went so well
they are repeating the event in July. In addition we will host a BBQ on the
fourth prior to the fireworks nearby, and will continue the Pot Luck Birthday
Bash tradition on the last Friday of the month. Final results of the Pool
League will be in shortly, and we are "in the running".
There is not enough room on this page to review the progress your Post has
made in recent years thanks to your work and common vision. We have rebuilt a
VFW Post that appeals to a more inclusive number of members and guests. Great
work. Entering the Pool League once again and forming a Men's Aux have greatly
benefited the Post, and both successes started with modest beginnings I can
assure you. Virtually every aspect of the Post, both physical and procedural,
has been changed improved or added. The first change was total renovation of
the creepy QM office to include full computer capability, a change now
mandated by National as all documents except the quarterly financial report
must be printed off the VFW.org web site. No snail mail! We have also gone to
one meeting/month, a change that has worked well. That is not to mention the
high tops, five flat screen TV’s w/NFL package, two new a/c units, smoke
eaters, flag pole renovation, and two projects that were much needed:
establishment of true food storage capability and finally complete renovation
of the canteen ceiling to include direct a/c access. Thanks all, it has been a
great ride!

ecky's. Must be running out of gas or ideas as well as time in office. I
recall my "short-timer" calendar while in Vietnam. I couldn't check off the
declining number of days fast enough while praying we would not be extended. I
certainly do not feel that way about the mostly fulfilling two years I have
had "the distinct honor and privilege" of working with you toward making this
the Post we have today. A VFW Post with an enviable atmosphere and bank
account. Nice, they seem to go together.
I had "the distinct honor and privilege" again last night May 11th in the role
of Installing Officer for your Post's Installation Ceremony for the 2010-2011
VFW year. This excellent slate will take office immediately following the
similar ceremony at the FL State Convention which many of us are attending
June 18-20 in Orlando. I am certain your incoming Commander Bob Nicholson will
have an informative report which Bill Koop might let him sneak into the July
Banner in time for publication.
I had an interesting conversation with State Sr Vice-elect Dan Duffy at the
recent District meeting held in the Palm Springs VFW. Basically he publicly
stated during the meeting that many Posts around the state of FL have slipped
down in terms of programs, reporting, and leadership. He further said [we
shall see] that State will start taking action against those Posts and
Commanders who are "not up to snuff" by VFW standards. Dan is originally from
our District 3, consequently I made a concerted effort to discuss these
matters with him after the meeting while the three Ladies Aux members bolted
for the canteen! Actually, thanks for going, and yes you outnumbered us guys
Becky. Anyway, he looked through his extensive Post files and actually
complimented us on our statistical record, implying we were certainly one of
the best on their books. Let's keep it up Post 5335.
Got to go as this must be my penultimate typed line.

April promises to
be a blow-out month at your Post. Check the calendar for an incredibly full
slate of events. I hope you will all participate as we host a large number of
varied activities.
You should all
have received a mailing in March related to a new benefit as a member of VFW
Post 5335. This applies to all three groups although the Ladies have had [at
cost] nation-wide insurance coverage as a membership incentive for years. This
basic program from American Insurance Life of TX [the Ladies is from
Monumental Insurance of MD] is automatic for members at no charge, and in
addition to any coverage you may currently have. You may opt for additional
coverage or not as with the Ladies program. There will be some follow-up
should you send in the card and then as with the Ladies program, mailings on a
roughly annual basis. Your expanded participation is entirely voluntary and
any claims [paid members only] should be referred to the company or our QM
office.
We are about to
"head out" to Ft McCoy after a highly successful St day run by the Men's Aux,
and we promise to bring back full details on our Department Retirement Home.

stated meetings of this Post shall be held on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday of each

Briefly
comrades, at our last meeting, Post members believe that one meeting per month
[the 2nd Tuesday to allow for monthly Banner lead times] is sufficient to
conduct Post business. Further, virtually all VFW Posts in FL meet once per
month no matter the size or seasonality. Finally, Special Meetings can be
called as per National By-Laws should the necessity arise.
